.The Uig Development Trust (UDT)
Uig is a beautiful and unique area on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis containing some of the islands most spectacular scenery. Stretching from Scaliscro to Mealista and beyond to North Harris it boasts spectacular white sand beaches, machair, moorland, peatland, lochs, wild Atlantic coastline, and treasure islands.
As well as the landscape and the variety of wildlife it supports (salmon, deer, golden eagles, otters, lobsters and scallops to name but a few), Uig has a strong and vibrant cultural heritage woven through its communities – with crofting and the Gaelic language still central to the area.
Uig includes the settlements of Scaliscro, Kinlochroag, Gisla, Enaclete, Ungeshader, Geshader, Loch Croistean, Carishader, Miavaig, Cliff, Valtos, Kneep, Reef, Uigen, Timsgarry, Erista, Crowlista, Aird Uig, Ardroil, Carnish, Mangersta, Islivig, and Breanish, with approximately 350 permanent residents living across 100 sq miles.
The Uig Development Trust SCIO (UDT) exists for the benefit of the community of Uig. The trust works with individuals, community groups, and other trusts to support sustainable community development in a collective and responsible manner.
The Trust acts as landlord for the Uig Community Shop. This essential service, for both residents and visitors, is operated commercially by the Uig Community Co-operative and provides groceries, camping supplies, petrol, a post office, and a laundrette service. The Trust reinvests the rental income back into the shop and into community projects.
For further visitor and accommodation information about Uig please go to the Outer Hebrides Tourism site.
We have an exciting development project currently underway to build some business units in Uig.
