Mangersta Shieling- Guest Information
Please read all the following information carefully before confirming your booking.
*Guests must bring their own firewood with them. Please ensure that is no more than 6 inches in length, so as to fit in the small stove. UDT recommends purchasing firewood from Macaskill Fuels in Stornoway or Uig Community Shop in Timsgarry
* The shieling will not be checked prior to every guest visit. Contact numbers given in the booking email are those of volunteers who may not always be able to respond to issues at short notice. UDT relies on all guests respecting the shieling and leaving it in the same condition they found it. Please report any damage or breakages straightaway so that repairs or replacements can be quickly attended to.
*Please turn up in daylight so you can find the shieling. If you are staying in the winter months this will mean arriving before 4pm.
The shieling is a traditional stone walled building located in a remote area, similar to walkers’ bothies found in other parts of the Highlands and Islands. The walls are dry stone, and not fully windproofed. This keeps the shieling dry, but you may find it draughty if there are strong winds. The facilities are basic, and all guests are advised to be aware of this and to ensure they arrive properly equipped in order to enjoy their stay. You may want to consider camping next to the shieling and use the shieling for cooking and eating. The shieling is approximately fifteen minutes walk from the road over rough moorland terrain. Walking shoes or boots and outdoor clothing are advised at all times of the year. Parking is available at the old military buildings just off the tarred road. The shieling location and parking are shown on this map and this will also be in your booking information.
The interior of the shieling is equipped with two long bench seats, a table that can be converted into a sleeping platform, a small stove and storage space for rucksacks etc under the benches and along the wall tops. There is a smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm and 2 battery powered camping lights fixed to the interior timber structure of the roof.
A short distance from the shieling is a stand-alone toilet and log store. The toilet operates by separating liquid and solid deposits. A bucket and compostable liner bag are provided, and solid waste must be disposed of in the waste chamber near the toilet. Full instructions for using the toilet are listed below and are also located in the building. Please adhere to them so as not to cause environmental harm or cause inconvenience to others.

Toilet Instructions
The toilet works by the user separating liquid and solid waste.
1. Liquid waste should go into the grey part of the toilet. Nothing further needs to be done, it will enter a waste pipe connected to the toilet and be disposed of.
2. Solid waste- Open the main toilet box lid, it opens towards you. Please make sure that there is a green biodegradable liner bag inside the red bucket. The roll of liners can be found next to the tissue dispenser.
3. Position the red bucket immediately behind the grey part of the toilet so it will catch the solid waste. Close the lid.
4. When you have finished open the lid and take out the liner and tie a knot in it. Please make sure the red bucket remains inside the toilet box.
5. After cleaning your hands pick up the manhole key which will be hanging underneath the soap dispenser.
6. Take the manhole key and liner bag over to the manhole lid, a short distance away, and marked by a yellow stick.
7. Place the manhole key in the slot and quarter-turn to the left or right
8. Lift the lid, place the liner inside the chamber and replace the lid.
9. Please return the manhole key to the toilet
10. Job’s done!

- Bucket, liners, hand soap and paper towels for use in the toilet
You will need to bring everything else you require for your stay with you. This should include:
- Food
- Firewood (can be purchased from Uig Community Shop in Timsgarry or many other outlets in Lewis and Harris)
- Drinking Water
- Crockery and cutlery
- Water for cooking and washing
- Sleeping equipment- mats or airbeds, sleeping bags
